Piazzolla was the maestro of 'nuevo tango'; his discography is large and confusing (this was the first album of his time in Italy), and while the musicians on Libertango certainly aren't the most interesting he'd work with, it's a beautifully produced album.

There's crying need for someone to do the legwork to assemble a true best-of Astor Piazzolla compilation from the variously owned sources of his music, which is devilishly difficult for the new listener to get a discographic grip on. Unfortunately, this two-disc set isn't it. These are rather odd recordings, apparently by Piazzolla himself on the bandoneón, but without his usual Quinteto.
